What is a headhunter?

Head Hunting in Human Resources is the search for candidates who are not necessarily currently looking for new job. In this process, we consider a slightly more specific audience. We also search for a more specialized profile and more particular knowledge than in a traditional search.  It’s called Head Hunting because one as a recruiter is on the lookout, in the hunting for talents within the job market.

Head Hunting specializes in management and leadership positions, senior executives in general, or professionals who may have experience in a specific area or field. For example, engineering, technology or knowledge in a particular product, such as sales.

What it takes to be good Head Hunter ?

Usually, in a regular selection process, we publish the job offer and candidates will apply to this position and after that, we start the application reviewing process.

However, the way a good headhunter contacts his candidates is totally different because as a recruiter he must invite the candidate to the process. We need to nurture and persuade the candidate. That is, to sell them the job opportunity, since in many cases these “hunted” professionals are already working and are not necessarily considering a change.

Once we have identified the professionals that we want to contact, we need to consider how we will approach them. It is vital to develop a trust and comfortable environment with the candidate.  Additionally, it is important to contact the candidate on a non-working schedule. We need to adapt to his schedule availability so it does not affect his current job. Which sometime can mean having to call a candidate at 9 pm at night or very early in the morning.

Another very important aspect of the job as a good headhunter is to be creative. We need to think a little out of the box, be curious, be a good researcher. Most importanly we need to be analytical to understand well what the company wants. It is critical that we propose improvements. Good head hunters may also need to work with thier clients to propose alternative profiles that may also adjusted to what the company really seeks. Above all, good head hunters need to be empathetic to generate a good relationship with the candidate and thus gain their trust.

What to do if you want to be hunted?

On the other hand, when a high-level executive wants to get another job offer the main tool used is LinkedIn. Therefore it is vital that every professional update his profile constantly. It is also important to be active, to comment on posts and to be open to invitations from other professionals. It is also important to maintain a good network of contacts and share your job search with them.

Keeping a good rapport.

In my opinion, every good Headhunter must show empathy towards the candidate because we know that maintaining a good relationship with all candidates is vital, not only for the process in which we are working at that time, but for later opportunities.

Finally it is important to treat each candidate with respect. It is importante to mantain the candidate informed about the process and consider what is in his best interest.

The world is constantly changing. Sometimes the same candidates that we have hunted in the past are the ones that call us. And they became our clients! Asking us to provide them a head hunting position that they have open at their current jobs.
